Mountain Checkout

The Mountain Flying Course is designed to provide the individual with the knowledge and skills to safely operate single-engine aircraft in mountains under visual conditions during daylight hours.

The course consists of a minimum of 7 hours of dual flight training. The instruction shall include a cross-country flight consisting of at least 150 NM through mountains. Weather permitting; the route will consist of low-level navigation up the coast of Vancouver Island up to Knight Inlet. From there the aircraft will follow the preferred VFR route to Kleena Kleene, where the aircraft will land at a mountain strip, then back down Bute Inlet to Courtenay.

There is also requirement for an essential level of knowledge, which will be met through ground instruction, consisting of not less than 3 hours.

In order to begin flight training, the candidate must hold a valid Private Pilots or higher Licence.

The following cost breakdown is provided based on an average, however prices may vary somewhat due to individual skill differences and the price of fuel.

Upon completion of the mountain flying course outlined above, the pilot will be qualified to fly single-engine aircraft under VFR conditions through mountains.
