It
has been said that flying floats is the most
fun that you can have with your pilot licence.
Canada allows ab initio training to be done
on floats, but the usual way is to get a licence,
either Private or Commercial, and then add the "Walk-on-Water' endorsement.
To
help you achieve this, Courtenay Flight Centre
offers training on our Cessna 180 on EDO 2870
Floats. This is a real "bush flying"
combination, and probably the minimum airplace
that will be encountered in Commercial Float
Operations. Training on an aircraft like the
one you will be flying commercially means you
are familiar with that bush place before getting
the job. This has the obvious benefit to the
prospective employer, of putting you to work
with only minimal company training.
The Transport Canada float rating requires only
7 hrs training. The truth is that this minimim
course is woefully inadequate to prepare any
pilot, regardless of other flight experience,
to operate a floatplace in any but the most
benign conditions. Realistic skills are required,
and to this end, we offer the following programmes:
BASIC FLOAT ENDORSEMENT 15 hrs
This program provides the training required
for the rating, with minimum cost, and constitues
the minimum experience to rent our airplane.
Since the training provides only elementary
skills, the renter will be resticted on where
he can go.

has provided greater skills. A thorough briefing
will still be required.

PROFESSIONAL
FLOAT RATING 50 hrs (includes
basic and advanced)
This course expands the basic and advanced skills
into more difficult conditions, and more challenging
situations. Since most commercial float operators
require 50 hrs experience for hiring, this course
meets their minimum time requirement. It also
has the advantage of assuring the employer that
the applicant has graduated from a structured
program, conducted by experienced professinoal
float pilots.
