Royal Canadian Air Cadets
Royal Canadian Air Cadets and the Air Cadet League of Canada were founded over sixty years ago on April 9, 1941. Individual squadrons marked the anniversary with events throughout the year ending May 30, 2002. Over 1-million young Canadians 12 to 18 years of age have benefited from air cadet training during the programs 60-year history. Royal Canadian Air Cadets is recognized as one of the most successful youth organizations of its kind in the world.

For most air cadets their first flying experience is the result of local familiarization flights and the flying scholarship program. Air cadet flying training involves both gliders and powered aircraft. Each year several hundred flying scholarships are awarded to qualifying cadets who can graduate as licenced glider or power pilots following summer training. More than 17,000 air cadets have graduated as private pilots since 1946 and earned their air cadet wings. Well over 1-million air cadet glider flights have been logged since 1965.

Courtenay Flight Center has been involved with the Air Cadet Flying Scholarship Program since 2000. Since then we have trained 62 cadets from British Columbia and the Northwest Territories to Private Pilot standards. With our 4 seat Cessna aircraft we are able to offer the cadets the added benefit of experiencing each lesson twice as all the cadets are paired into groups. While the first cadet flies up front with an instructor, the second watches from behind until it is time to switch seats. By pairing the cadets for each flight, we can also fly to other locations and experience various airport and airspace procedures. Besides Courtenay Airpark, many of the cadets will have the opportunity to experience such airports as Port Hardy, Port McNeil, Campbell River, Powell River, Gilles Bay, Port Alberni, Tofino, Nanaimo, Victoria, Sechelt, Pitt Meadows, & Chilliwack.
